Hawk story

Got this email today:

… Hawk hit by truck on I-64 near Richmond, Va doing 65 mph and flew
away …

According to a friend of a co-worker, a friend of his, Walt Halsey (and I know Walt,
as well) hit this hawk with his Ford Explorer on I64. They stopped at
the next rest area (New Kent rest stop), and call VA State Police.
Responding Officer called a local game warden.

…the low-flying hawk got caught in the slipstream of an 18 wheeler
traveling along-side of the Explorer. The hawk then went into and
through an oval opening in the bumper along-side the license plate…
The driver saw it all happen…

…and the rest is evident…

Stuck in my head…

Like just about everybody in the world, I am unique in that I often get a song stuck in my head. See what I did there? Everybody’s unique, baby! Anyway, I thought I would share the songs that are stuck in my head with folks. This serves two purposes:

Rather than posting actual content that people might find interesting/thought-provoking/funny/comment-inducing, I can just do this and call it content! SCORE!
There’s the more-likely-than-not chance that it will get stuck the head of anyone reading. Not exactly evil, but not exactly nice depending on the song. Sometimes Chumbawumba gets stuck in there and I just have to roll with it.

I may eventually put this over on one of the side bars, but for now:

Stars of CCTV

I haven’t listened to Hard-Fi in awhile, but their last CD was called “Stars of CCTV” and it’s pretty good. Unfortunately, this band, The Get Out Clause have proven Hard-Fi completely wrong:

Gizmodo has a good write-up on how it was all done. The short version is that freedom of information can be a beautiful thing.

Yes, I’m aware this is becoming a “things on YouTube I thought were cool” kind of site. Bet you never thought you would find yourself wishing I went back to bitching about the RIAA and DRM!

I’ve seen this kind of thing before, and I always think the same thing. If I were a musician and lost a bet like this, I would play this nice long solo and at the end sing in a long, high-pitched, drawn out tribute to Hank Williams at his drunkest, “You won, I lost. You’re welcome.”

While on the YouTube kick, this is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on YouTube.

West Virginia eletction “issues”

About a year ago, I was sitting at a bar talking to some strangers about this year’s presidential election. That’s right, talking politics at the bar. I said it, wanna fight about it? We talked about who we thought would win both races, and we were mostly right: We thought McCain would carry the GOP nod while the race between Obama & Clinton would be pretty tight. Of course, we assumed Clinton, seen by us as a symbol of old-school politics, would win. Whoever won, I had a nagging feeling the Democrats were setting themselves up for some disappointment. I couldn’t help thinking that a noticeable portion of this country would only see a black guy or a woman and ignore what they had to say.

Call it cynicism, sexism, racism, ism, ism, ism… All I’m saying is there might not be enough people to affect an election outcome, but I certainly think there are enough to make a dent. Add to that people for whom voting is some knee-jerk reaction rather than a conscious decision: “Vote for the (older/wealthier) White Guy”, “Vote for the (Democrat/Republican)” I know there are people like this out there. Hell, I know people like this! Why then does it always get to me when I see stuff like this?

Anyone remember Green Jellÿ?

I watched the first season, and it’s a cute show. I’ll always like Judy Greer, if only for her part as Kitty on the best TV show ever. Anyway, the song… the 2-second snippet played over the title sounded pretty good. Turns out the whole song is pretty good. Never mind that the video is kind of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” lame. I guess that makes it hip?

I love Sarah Silverman. I don’t generally like comedians who do a lot of songs, but hers are almost always great. Who could forget Give the Jew Girl Toys, You’re Gonna Die Soon, German Cars or The Poop Song? Yeah, well this one’s new to me even though it’s been on YouTube for 4 months. Considering it’s a recording from ABC, I doubt it will be there much longer.
